Becoming a Canadian citizen means gaining full membership in Canadian society. It gives you the right to vote, the ability to travel internationally with a Canadian passport, and the assurance that Canada is truly your permanent home
Who Can Apply?
You may be eligible to apply for Canadian citizenship if you meet the following requirements:
Permanent Resident Status: You must hold valid permanent resident status in Canada.
Physical Presence in Canada: You must have been physically present in Canada for at least 1,095 days (three years) within the past five years.
Time spent in Canada as a temporary resident or protected person may count as half a day, up to a maximum of 365 days.
Time spent outside Canada while working as a Crown servant—or as the family member of a Crown servant—may also be counted.
Language Proficiency: Applicants between the ages of 18 and 54 must demonstrate proficiency in English or French.
Knowledge of Canada: Applicants aged 18 to 54 are required to pass a citizenship test that assesses knowledge of Canada’s history, values, institutions, and symbols.
Adbissibility: Applicants must not be subject to any prohibitions, such as certain criminal convictions, that would make them ineligible for citizenship.
Benefits of Canadian Citizen
Canadian citizenship offers rights and responsibilities that go beyond permanent residency.
Participate in Canada’s Democracy
Citizens can vote in elections and run for public office, helping shape the country’s future.
Hold a Canadian Passport
A Canadian passport allows you to travel internationally with greater ease, often without needing a visa. It also ensures you can access help and protection from the Canadian government while abroad.
Secure and Stable Status
Citizenship is permanent and does not carry residency obligations, unlike permanent residency.
Unrestricted Entry into Canada
As a Canadian citizen, you have the guaranteed right to enter and remain in Canada at any time. You cannot be denied entry or lose your status, regardless of how long you’ve been abroad.
Pass Citizenship to Future Generations
Canadian citizens can pass their status to children born abroad, a benefit not available to permanent residents.
Exclusive Career Opportunities
As a Canadian citizen, you can apply for certain government and security-sensitive jobs that are not open to non-citizens. This can broaden your career opportunities, including access to certain positions requiring citizenship.
